Young Rangers fan dies after cancer battle as tributes paid to “fighter”
People attending Martyn Cassidy’s funeral have been asked to wear blue.
Tributes have been paid to a dad-of-one who died from cancer aged 29.
Martyn Cassidy, from Hamilton, passed away on March 26.
The funeral for the Rangers fan will be held at Daldowie Crematorium on Wednesday, April 9. Friends and family have been asked to wear blue in memory of his love of the Ibrox side.
Tributes have been led by the footballing community where Martyn was a well known player and face. His former club West Park United held a minute’s silence before their West of Scotland division four match against BSC Glasgow on Saturday.
The club are supporting the Beatson cancer charity this season and have their name on their jersey and are donating £10 for every point they win.
A spokesperson for the club said: “It’s my sad duty to report that one of our former players, Martyn Cassidy, has succumbed to cancer at 29.
“From our football family to Martyn’s, we extend our deepest condolences at this difficult time. Rest easy son.”
A spokesperson for Easterhouse FA said: “Devastating news one of our former players and friend, young Martyn Cassidy sadly passed away yesterday aged only 29 due to illness.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to Martyn’s family and especially his young daughter. Football brings people together and makes families. RIP Martyn.”
His Mum Caroline Cassidy said his passing has left her “incomplete”. She said: “I’ve not had the heart to go and read the messages and wishes for my son Martyn Cassidy from all the family and friends, but we as a family thank everyone for their condolences, our lives are incomplete.
“He is a big part of us all now, there’s no words ,thank you all again.”
Martyn’s cousin Christopher Graham said: “Been dreading this post for a while now. There are no words or pictures that can describe the hole left behind.
“Going to Ibrox to watch our team will never be the same again. Rip cuz, I am going to miss you.”
Daniel Cameron said: “Gutted and in disbelief that we lost Martyn Cassidy. A great guy and a friend as well as my second son.
“Football brings people together and into each other’s families and hearts. Martyn was definitely in my heart.
“A nice all round guy that was a fighter on the park and off it through his illness.”
