Parents of baby overdosed on paracetamol take him home from hospital over concerns for his care
The tot spent two weeks fighting for his life after he was given 10 times the recommended dose of paracetamol.
The family of a baby who was overdosed at a Glasgow hospital have taken him home over fears for his medical care.
Eight-week-old Zohan Hassan spent two weeks fighting for his life after he was given 10 times the recommended dose of paracetamol at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) in Glasgow on March 18.
First-time parents Ahad Ul Hassan and Hira Mansoor, from Ayr, told how their world “flipped upside down” during the incident.
Zohan had initially been admitted for a hernia repair, before the terrifying error saw the tot admitted to intensive care.
Doctors later told the couple the ‘human error’ had resulted on swelling on their tiny son’s brain, sparking fears he may be left with irreversible brain damage and problems with his vision.
The family say they have now lost all confidence in the hospital as they plan to look after their by themselves.
Dad Ahad, 26, said: “We are tired of all the pain and suffering Zohan and our family are going through due to the hospital’s error. He will be going home. We can’t see him in pain anymore with all these tests and monitoring.”
Zohan was discharged on Tuesday after he was examined by doctors.
The family has now drafted in one of Scotland’s top lawyers, Aamer Anwar, who has written to the hospital expressing the family’s “serious concerns and distress”.
Mr Anwar also stated that the hospital has “breached its duty of care” and has requested a full investigation be carried out by the Crown Office.
The lawyer – who has instructed on some of Scotland’s most high profile cases – stepped in to represent the family after medics originally suggested that Zohan should be discharged on Friday, March 28.
At that time, the family were worried that Zohan was not fit for discharge and Mr Anwar wrote to the hospital’s Clinical Director requesting he remained in their care.
The discharge was later agreed for Tuesday.
Mr Anwar said: “Parents have the right to expect when their sick children are taken to hospital, they will be given the very best in medical treatment, sadly that is no longer the case at the RHC.
“The RHC stands accused of breaching its duty of care.
“The question for Crown Office, is how long this can be allowed to continue.
“We will be asking for the Crown Office to carry out a full independent investigation.”
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) have since launched an internal investigation.
Apologising for the incident, Dr Claire Harrow, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Deputy Medical Director for Acute Services, said: “We would like to sincerely apologise to the family of baby Zohan Ul Hassan.
“We are continuing to deliver the best possible care for Zohan and we continue to offer support to his family at this distressing time.
“We have launched a full investigation into this incident and his family will be fully informed of and involved in this process as it continues.”
She added: “Due to patient confidentiality, we cannot go into detail on Zohan’s case, however we are pleased that he is doing well and was clinically fit for discharge this week.
“We will continue to be in touch with Zohan’s parents regarding his care and have invited them to reach out to us at any time.”
